Eating Out in Lanzarote

There are thousands of restaurants in Lanzarote for visitors to choose from.  But just as elsewhere these vary in quality, making it difficult for anyone who has just landed to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Restaurant Types

For a small island Lanzarote is surprisingly multicultural.  Attracting guests from all over the world.  And as result the types of cuisine on offer reflect this diversity.

In the main resorts tourists can therefore expect to encounter Chinese, Indian, Mexican and Italian restaurants.  As well as more traditional Spanish eateries, tapas bars and upscale restaurants serving modern international food.

Canarian Cuisine

Many first time visitors to Lanzarote could be forgiven for thinking that the national dishes of the island might comprise seafood.  However, Coñejeros generally consume more meat than fish.  A possible cultural hangover from the pre-Spanish Guanche inhabitants of the island who were, apparently, poor fishermen and who therefore favoured meats such as goat and rabbit.  Both of which still crop up regularly on menus.

Standard fare in a typical Canarian restaurant features starters such as goat’s cheese, often grilled with mojos or sauce accompaniments. And the ever popular Gambas al ajillo - a hot dish of prawns served in oil heavily jacked with garlic and chilli - great for dunking bread into.

Main courses usually comprise fish or meat - usually simply cooked or grilled and served with the Canarian speciality of papas arrugadas, or wrinkled potatoes - essentially potatoes boiled in salt water.  Creating a salty glaze.

Resort Restaurants

Lanzarote´s main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise have the highest concentration of restaurants on the island.

The best selection of  restuarants in Puerto del Carmen, the islands most popular resort, can be found in and around the Old Town harbour area.  Which provides an atmosphere backdrop for popular establishments such as Casa Roja, Bahia and many more.  A further concentration can be found along the main Avenida de las Playas - the 6km long beachfront strip which runs from one end of the resort to the other.  But quality here can be more variable.

Special Occasions & Fine Dining

There are a number of more upscale restaurants catering to those who like to push the boat out little when on holiday.  For atmosphere and ambience it’s hard to beat LagOmar - the former home of Hollywood film star Omar Sharif.  Which was built for the actor by the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique.

Local legend has it that soon after taking possession of his new home - built into the side of a disused quarry in Nazaret - which Sharfi gambled it and lost it in a high stake game of bridge.  And left the island in a fit of pique - never to return.

Today, LagOmar serves up beautifully presented, if pricey dishes, to a clientele of locals and tourists.

Lanzarote boasts a clement year round climate. Making the island a twelve month of the year holiday destination. But there are still variations and climatic quirks that any visitor should be aware of. Not least as these can impact upon choice of resort or the time of year selected.

Desert Climate

Lanzarote is located just 70 miles off the coast of Africa, in close primoxity to the Western Sahara. So whilst this means that the island lies on the same line of latitude as part of Mexico and Florida it also means that warm days can often be followed by cool nights. Especially during the winter months or for anyone staying at any sort of altitude outside of the main resorts.

As a result anyone visiting the island between October and March would be well advised to bring a jacket or coat for warmth during the evenings.

Temperate Summers

Lanzarote is a popular holiday destination amongst visitors from Spain. Many of whom flock to the Canary Islands during the summer months to escape the stifling heat of the mainland. The King of Spain even maintains a palatial holiday villa in Costa Teguise, the island’s northern most resort.

Temperatures can still get intense - especially if the island is being subjected to a calima. But this heat is usually moderated by a cool breeze - which helps to make the heat bearable and which can lull holiday makers into a false sense of security. Often resulting in sunburn.

The Wind Factor

Lanzarote lies in the path of the North East trade winds which once helped to propel Spanish galleons across the Atlantic to the New World. And these winds blow across the island - sometimes quite fiercely - from March through until the end of August.

One could be forgiven for thinking that all of this wind would produce rain bearing clouds. But Lanzarote is a very arid island - and is also relatively flat in terms of its terrain - with most of the volcanoes lying at well below 300 metres. Which means that there are no tall mountains to encourage precipitation.

The incredible house that’s been created within a series of volcanic bubbles by the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique never fails to blow visitors away.  And is without doubt the most unusual property in Lanzarote.

This ingenious feat of architecture was Manrique´s first major piece of work on the island and perfectly encapsulates his organic approach and desire to create a perfect symbiosis between man, art and nature.

Manrique returned home from America in 1966, just as the tourist industry on Lanzarote began to take off.  Aware of the dangers, the well-connected Cesar was determined to avert the threat of his beloved island becoming buried beneath a sea of five star concrete.

He championed an ecological approach towards development, but needed to physically demonstrate both his skills as an architect and what could be achieved by uniting art with nature in order to win over opinion.

So he decided to build a home, using land had that instead been buried beneath a sea of lava.

Manrique discovered his site by walking the lava fields that surround much of Tahiche.  The green tip of a fig tree caught his eye growing just above the sea of black volcanic rock and on closer inspection he found that this emerged from one of five large bubbles that had been created within the flow.

Work commenced, the five underground bubbles were interconnected, and by the end of 1968 Manrique´s creation was complete, providing him with the perfect work and display space and Lanzarote with a model and vision for future development.

Manrique´s house basically sits on two levels.  The upper floor looks pretty much like a large traditional white washed island home from the exterior but inside massive windows give incredible vistas to the lava fields whilst also incorporating bits of the flow in places, so serving to unite indoor and outdoor space effectively.

Underground, each volcanic bubble - measuring around 5 m (16 ft) in diameter - has been transformed into an elegantly designed room, with its own distinctive character, furniture and colour.

In one visitors find a Zen-like, gently trickling fountain; in another, a palm links the lower with the upper level. The outdoor barbecue and dining area features a traditional grill alongside an open-air pool, which is filled by a waterspout reminiscent of the work of Mexican artist Louis Barragan.

As with all of Manrique´s later creations the planting is impeccable and inventive, creating form and providing splashes of colour that contrast perfectly with the white walls and black lava.

Today, Manrique´s house appears to be “very 1970s” to the eyes of many visitors. But at the time it was considered very progressive by the cognoscenti, if not outlandishly futuristic.

As a result a non-stop stream of glamorous visitors, such as royalty and film stars, beat a path to his front door, all clamoring to see this wonderful new creation.

Unsurprisingly, the house remains just as popular today, welcoming on average some 300,000 visitors a year and now houses the best art gallery on the island as well as the HQ of the Cesar Manrique Foundation, a non-profit body established to promoting his work and artistic philosophy.

The Jardin de Cactus is located close to the village of Guatiza and is home to over 10,000 of the plant world’s spiniest species. Arrayed to optimum effect in a bowl like auditorium that was formerly a quarry.

The origins of the Cactus Garden date back to the 1970´s - when the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique was seeking sites on Lanzarote to transform into unique tourist attractions.

Manrique´s philosophy was to fuse art with nature - and this he achieved to great effect after persuading the island government to acquire the land here and renovate the traditional windmill which stands over it. However work was then shelved until the late 1980´s as other projects around the island were progressed.

In the meantime though the eminent botanist Estanislao Gonzales Ferrer set to work collecting cacti and succulents from across the world, as well as indigenous species from the Canary Islands. And in 1990 the Jardin de Ccatus first officially announced its presence to the world - with the inauguration of a giant metal cactus sculpture at its entrance. Indeed this cactus motif is worked into many aspects of the site - such as on door handles and in sculptures located throughout the gardens.

Visitors are met by a traditional taro shaped entrance which hides the site within and which then gives away to a panoramic view across the gardens. Which are planted on dry stone walled terraces - so echoing the fields around and the traditional methods of agriculture on Lanzarote.

Indeed the Cactus Garden has been located with a great deal of sensitivity as this part of the island was once the centre of Lanzarote´s lucrative cochineal industry.

The cochineal beetle has an insatiable thirst for the sap of the tunera cactus. And enterprising locals use to harvest the beetle’s larvae and then crush them to make a powerful red dye. Which was used to colour the coats of the 18th century British army - amongst many other uses.

However - this period of prosperity for the dyestuff ran out as artificial colourants came onto the market in the later 1800´s. But it is still possible to observe just how this process was made possible as a local farmer is always standing ready to provide a demonstration in the car park.

Lanzarote’s popularity as a holiday destination is well illustrated by the fact that the island’s sole airport, Arrecife (ACE) is the 9th busiest in all of Spain, handling over 5.5 million passengers annually.

The airport however is not in fact located in Arrecife - which is the islands capital - but some 3km away, in an area known locally as Guacimeta.  Close to the islands main holiday resort of Puerto del Carmen.

The airport comprises two main terminals - Terminal 2 for internal flights to mainland Spain and the other islands in the Canarian archipelago.  And Terminal One which deals with all flights to Lanzarote from non-Spanish nations.  The majority of which originate in the UK, as Britain is Lanzarote´s most important tourist market.

International flight departures are based on the upper floor of Terminal 2 and arrivals on the lower floor.

Transport Links

The bulk of tourists are transported to and from Arrecife airport on board coaches organised by their tour operators.  There is a public bus service which runs to the airport from the capital Arrecife.  Alternatively visitors use taxis to transport themselves - which are readily available just outside the doors of the arrivals hall in Terminal One.

A number of local Lanzarote car hire companies also have desks in the main arrivals hall.

Transfer Times

The following timetable gives a rough idea of how long it takes to transfer from the airport to each of the main resorts on Lanzarote.

Matagorda                             5-10 minutes

Puerto del Carmen               10-15 minutes

Puerto Calero                        20 minutes

Costa Teguise                       15-20 minutes

Playa Blanca                         35-40 minutes

Facilites

Terminal One houses a number of bars and restaurants, alongside duty free outlets and shops.  Visitors should note that there is no bureau de change in the airport - although there are cash machines located in both the arrivals and departure lounge.

Airlines

Arrecife airport is currently serviced by the following British airlines and operators:

  • easyJet
  • Thomson
  • Thomas Cook
  • Avro
  • First Choice
  • Monarch
  • Jet2

Airport Museum

The airports original Terminal building has now been converted into an interesting aeronautical museum - which is free of charge and well worth a visit, especially if experiencing a flight delay.  It is located within the grounds of the airport close to Terminal One and is clearly signposted.

The Jameos del Agua is arguably the ultimate example of Cesar Manrique´s desire to fuse art with nature in order to create unique and sustainable tourist attractions on Lanzarote.  As a counter to the golf courses and water parks that were springing up in other Spanish sun spots back in the 1960´s and 70´s as package tourism started to take off.

The Jameos is part of a 6 km long tunnel initially formed by the eruption of the nearby La Coroña volcano.  And centuries ago was used by islanders as a hiding place from regular pirate raids and incursions on the island.

A jameos (derived from the language of the Guanche who inhabited the island prior to the Spanish conquest) is essentially an opening in the ground and the Jameos del Agua comprises three such openings, the Jameo Chico, the Jameo Grande and the Jameo Redondo.

The Jameos del Agua was Cesar Manrique´s first major public work on Lanzarote, created with the help of his close collaborator Jesus Soto and first opened to the public in 1966.  Creating such a stir that it was soon attracting all sorts of VIP visitors from overseas.  Such as Hollywood film legend Rita Heyworth, who described it as “The Eighth Wonder of the World”.

Visitors pass through a small entrance and down a beautifully crafted spiral staircase made of volcanic rock before entering the main volcanic chamber.  Which is auditorium like in appearance and which is dominated by a natural lake, which is home to a species of blind albino crab that is unique to Lanzarote.

Plants and volcanic stone surround the lagoon, which then leads up and out into a brilliant white swimming pool area, which is apparently reserved for the sole use of the King of Spain!

A second spiral stone staircase brings visitors to the Casa de los Volcanes, which is home to a fascinating permanent exhibition about volcanic activity in the Canary Islands.

The Jameos is doubly atmospheric at nighttime, when visitors can enjoy a meal and traditional folk dancing and music on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (information and reservations - 928 848 024).

Lanzarote may be a small island, but it´s big on tourist attractions. And the most popular of them all is the incredible Timanfaya Volcano Park - which is literally out of this world.

Lanzarote was rocked by one of the worlds longest ever volcanic eruption from 1730 to 1736. Which buried eleven villages and covered around one quarter of the island - much of it fertile, agricultural land - in a sea of lava.

Today, the Volcano Park at Timanfaya is Lanzarote´s most popular tourist attraction. In 2006 alone, nearly 900,000 people visited this unique lava scape - which is home to a sea of colourful dormant volcanoes and spent cones.

The landscape here is raw and eerie, resembling how our planet must have looked when first formed millions of years ago. Or perhaps like another world altogether - as Timanfaya is often compared to the Moon. Indeed NASA astronauts in training for the Apollo 13 mission were shown detailed images of Timanfaya in order to prepare them for their lunar landing.

Erosion has done little to disturb natures work. The lava fields and lapilli (the black fine volcanic pebbles and stones) all retain a pristine look about them. Helped by the fact that visitors to Timanfaya are not permitted to walk through the park. Instead the coaches, which collect visitors from the car park, wend their way through the landscape.

The skilful drivers stop their vehicles at numerous points along the route so that visitors can get a proper look at the variety of incredible vistas Timanfaya has to offer. There is also a commentary throughout the tour, provided in English, Spanish and German. Giving an eyewitness acount of the eruptions as recorded in the diary of Father Curbelo, the parish priest of nearby Yaiza.

Cesar Manrique created a visitor centre and restaurant on top of a volcano - the Islote de Hilario - in the centre of the park. Here visitors can enjoy entertaining demonstrations which attest to the heat still emanating from many miles beneath the earth. As well as watching their food cooked by the same natural power source on a huge open barbecue.

Visitors to Timanfaya simply park up and then show their admission tickets as they board any of the coaches departing at regular intervals. The tour through the Volcano Park takes around 40 minutes. Five minutes back in the direction of Yaiza is the camel station where visitors can enjoy a twenty minute ride around the perimeter of the park.

Open :: Daily 10.00 - 18.00 Admission :: €8 per vehicle Parking :: Free

Camel Ride :: €10 per camel

How do you go about buying property in Lanzarote? The purchase process is simple and straightforward and is open to all - you don’t need to be a resident of Lanzarote.

ESTABLISH YOUR BUDGET

Allow 10% on top of the purchase price to cover the following items:

  • Stamp Duty - 6% (5.5% on new builds)
  • Registry Fee
  • Notary Fee
  • Mortgage Arrangement Fees
  • Lawyers Fee

The standard Estate Agents fee is 5%.  This is included in the purchase price and is paid by the vendor.

APPLY FOR A NIE NUMBER

Non-residents require a NIE (non-residents identification) number in order to open a bank account and complete the property purchase.  This is a simple administrative process which we handle on your behalf and which costs €50.

OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT

The simple, standard way of completing your purchase is to transfer your funds into a locally based bank account.

It is easy to open a non-resident account here and your chosen estate agent in Lanzarote (2) will be happy to assist you in opening such an account at the local bank of your choice.

SECURE A MORTGAGE

Interest rates in Lanzarote (and the Eurozone) are currently lower than in the UK.  So it makes good financial sense - and is standard practice - to apply for a mortgage with the local bank of your choice.

Non-residents can apply for mortgages of up to 70% of the value of the property they wish to purchase.

Local banks will require the following paperwork:

  • Payslips/payroll (3 previous months)
  • P60
  • Passport photocopy (for all named applicants)
  • Proof of other income/assets

The self-employed will need to provide the following additional paperwork:

  • Statement of accounts (last two years)
  • Proof of tax payments (last two years)

Some local banks may ask to carry out a credit check on applicants in their country of residence.

PROPERTY SEARCH

Your estate agent will carry out a basic property search on your behalf to verify that the property is free of debt, including rates and community fees, where applicable.

PURCHASE OPTION CONTRACT

Once you have selected a property and decided to make a purchase your estate agent prepares a Purchase Option Contract.

This Contract outlines and codifies all of the information relevant to your purchase, such as the timescale for completion (usually 3-6 months but mutually agreeable between buyer and vendor) and the agreed price.

The Contract becomes effective upon payment by the buyer of a deposit equivalent to 10% of the purchase price.

This deposit payment is non-refundable. Should the buyer withdraw after this Contract has been signed they then forfeit this 10% deposit. If the vendor withdraws they must refund the 10% deposit plus payment of a further 10%.

COMPLETION

Prior to the agreed completion date the buyer must ensure that the necessary funds (i.e. the purchase price plus the additional 10% to cover the costs such as stamp duty and fees outlined above) are readily available for withdrawal from their non-resident bank account.

Before the Purchase Option Contract expires your estate agent then arranges for both parties and/or their legal representatives to attend before the Notary for the signing of final legal documents and title deeds.

As the title deeds and legal documents are drawn up in Spanish only it is a legal and obligatory requirement that all non-Spanish speakers are accompanied by a sworn translator.

A sworn translator will need to attend and the cost of their service ranges from €60 to €120 (depending upon the quantity of documentation requiring translation)  The buyer must pay for this service on the day.

INDEPENDENT SOLICITORS

Whilst local estate agents provide a complete and impartial service for buyers it is important to note that our fee is paid by the vendor.  As such we recommend that all buyers employ the services of an independent solicitor.

REGISTERING THE PURCHASE

The buyers property purchase must be officially registered with the local Land Registry Office.  This is carried out by the independent solicitor - or if the buyer has not employed a solicitor - by their local bank.

TECHINCAL SURVEYS

Please note that it is standard practice in Lanzarote to purchase property without carrying out a full technical survey.  Further the valuation carried out by the local bank is solely for the purposes of mortgage valuation and is not a surveyors or engineers report.

If desired, your estate agent can arrange for a full, certified survey to be undertaken on the buyers behalf by a locally registered quantity surveyor.

The best climate on the island. Breathtaking beaches, a wide range of good quality hotels and the best selection of luxury holiday villas in Lanzarote. Playa Blanca really has all of the right ingredients for that perfect holiday.

Playa Blanca lies down at the southern tip of Lanzarote - ensuring that the resort generally enjoys the best weather the island can offer. Especially during the winter months. And is now the second most popular destination for holiday makers on the island after Puerto del Carmen.

Playa Blanca basically comprises three small coves, set within one larger sheltered bay. And has grown rapidly from the small fishing village which still lies at its heart. Extending from the beautiful beaches at Papagayo in the east through to the lighthouse at Faro de Pechiguera in the west.

Just across the Bocaina Strait sits the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. Creating an atmospheric spectacle at night as the lights there shimmer across the water. During the day tourists hop between the two islands aboard ferries that dock and depart from the port area close to the centre of Playa Blanca.

The resort still revolves around the original fishing village, which is home to the small but attractive town beach - Playa Blanca - from which the town takes its name. As well as the bulk of the bars, restaurants and shops. To the east of the centre is the neighbouring beach of Playa Dorada - and to the west Playa Flamingo. With all three of these bays united by a sea front promenade that runs from one end of the resort to the other.

Just beyond Playa Dorada - in the direction of Papagayo - is the relatively new Marina Rubicon. Which plays host to luxury yachts, up market shops, good quality bars and restaurants (such as Lanzarote´s very own branch of the Café Del Mar chain) and a twice-weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

During the day, life in the resort revolves around the beaches. And a visit to the natural coves and bays at nearby Papagayo is an absolute must. Whilst as night falls the focus shifts back to the town centre - with the accent more on relaxed sea front dining than wild nightlife.

Just five minutes down the coast from Puerto del Carmen lies the stylish marina of Puerto Calero. Since the opening of the Hesperia and Costa Calero hotels a couple of years ago the Marina has really established itself as Lanzarote´s fourth resort. And is now home to some of the best high-end shopping on the island. A fascinating museum, some excellent bars and restaurants and the most exciting excursions that Lanzarote can offer.

Puerto Calero was created in 1989 and has emerged as one of the best luxury marinas on this side of the Atlantic. Providing berths for over 420 vessels, as well as an atmospheric backdrop for some of Lanzarote´s best quality holiday villas and the most exclusive selection of property in Lanzarote.

These days the Marina is bustling with life. As tourists visit to sample the relaxed and luxurious ambience that is best enjoyed from one of the many bars and restaurants lining the quayside. Many of them will also be there for a day at sea with Catlanza, the luxury catamaran operators. Whose trip along the coast to the beaches at Papagayo is amongst the most popular on the island.

Puerto Calero is also home to Lanzarote´s very own Yellow Submarine - operated by Submarine Safaris. Which takes tourists on an exciting voyage of undersea exploration to the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.

Back on dry land the Marina also boasts an art gallery, a fascinating whale and dolphin museum and some excellent spa facilities in both of the nearby hotels.

Hire a car, take a taxi or jump on board the Catlanza bus which runs from all of the main resorts to the Marina.

Puerto del Carmen is the epicentre of Lanzarote´s tourist industry. As this is both the islands oldest and most popular resort.

Formerly a small fishing village called La Tiñosa tourism first took off here around the harbour area in what is now known as The Old Town. Which is in fact only marginally older than the other half of the resort – refered to as The New Town. With a demarcation line that runs roughly from the Fariones Hotel in the centre of the resort.

Holiday apartments in Puerto del Carmen are the predominant form of accommodation. As the resort is serviced by just two main hotels along with a selection of holiday villas. Making the resort a very cost effective option with rental prices starting from as little as £220 per week for a basic one bedroom apartment.

In the New Town the resort is demarcated by the Avenida de las Playas – which runs all the way alongside the 6km of beaches, which were instrumental in creating Puerto del Carmen´s popularity with holidaymakers. On the opposite side of the road from the beach lies a long row of shops, bars and restaurants. And Centro – the central part of the strip - remains the epicenter of nightlife for the whole resort.

In the Old Town holiday apartments, bars and restaurants are all clustered around the harbour area. Which is the place to head for come nightfall as there are some excellent eateries arrayed around the port.

During the daytime life revolves around the resorts beaches. And there are a number to choose from. Playa Grande is Puerto del Carmen´s biggest beach stretching 1.2km – and offers good facilities such as sun loungers, umbrellas and toilets. It’s also especially safe for bathing and young children.

Playa Chica – located behind a little residential enclave next to the Fariones Hotel is the best for watersports. As parascending, banana boats and jet-skis can all be hired on the small jetty next to the beach. Playa Chica is also partially enclosed by volcanic rock, making it a great location for diving and snorkeling.

These beaches can get crowded – especially in high season. So it’s also well worth checking out the smaller beaches that dot the coastline as you walk away from Playa Grande in the direction of the San Antonio Hotel. And the small beach in front of the Fariones – next door to Playa Chica – is also ideal for more peace and space.

As a result of its popularity with overseas visitors the market for property for sale in Puerto del Carmen also remains buoyant. As overseas buyers are able to enjoy twelve month rental returns on their investment thanks to the resort’s clement year round climate.

We have put together a helpful guide to all of Lanzarote’s resorts. Click on the destinations below to read more about all the island’s resorts.

Costa Teguise

Playa Blanca

Puerto Del Carmen

Puerto Calero

Costa Teguise is Lanzarote´s most northerly resort and was originally developed under the aegis of the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique as a sort of coastal sister to the former island capital of Teguise, which lies some ten miles inland.

The resort first took off back in the 1970´s with the construction of the Gran Melia Salinas – and evoled apace during the 1980´s as Lanzarote´s reputation and populariry as a tourist resort grew.

Today, Costa Teguise boasts five beautiful beaches, an excellent selection of bars and restaurants and some of the best holiday accommodation on the island. And it´s the perfect base for those who are keen to explore Lanzarote´s natural beauty and cultural attractions.

The heart of the resort revolves around the Pueblo Marinero and Costa Teguise´s largest beach – Playa Las Cucharas. The Pueblo Marinero – Manrique´s re-interpretation of a traditional white washed fishing village – is home to a number of bars and restaurants. As well as regular market days every Thursday (daytime) and Friday (evenings from 6pm). Although neither of these rival the big Sunday market which takes place in the old island capital of Teguise – a fifteen minute drive away.

The 600 metre stretch of sand at Playa Las Cucharas is very popular with windsurfers – but as the waters here are carefully segregated it is also an excellent beach for families with young children. As the beach shelves gently into the water and there are amenities such as toilets, sun shades and shops on hand.

A seafront promenade in the resort is close to completion – which will soon create a unified walkway from Las Cucharas through to the smaller beach at Playa Jablillo – located just in front of the Occidental Teguise Playa Hotel. Playa Jablillo offers less in the way of facilities – but does boast a man made lagoon – created with huge volcanic boulders. Making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling and diving – depending of course on the tides.

From here the walkway continues round to the beach at Playa Bastian – another fine stretch of golden sand, which is a little more protected from the wind. The beach here also boasts good facilities and amenities but is less suitable for bathing – especially for young children –as rocks and pebbles have to be negotiated in order to get into the sea.

For those in search of even more peace and quiet Playa de los Charcos at the northern end of the resort – past the Gran Melia hotel – and Playa del Ancla to the southern end offer even more seclusion.

Lanzarote - Holiday Essentials

The eastern most Canary Island of Lanzarote is well established as one of the most popular destinations amongst UK tourists.  As this little speck of Spain offers a winning combination of great accommodation, fantastic year round weather and a truly unique range of visitor attractions and things to do.

Lanzarote Holiday Accommodation

As you´d expect from an island that attracts over one million British visitors annually Lanzarote offers a wide range of good quality and competitively priced accommodation.

Holiday apartments in Lanzarote are the most popular budget option.  Starting from as little as £250 a week for a one bed apartment in the islands most popular resort - Puerto del Carmen.

For those seeking a little more luxury Playa Blanca is the place to head for.  As the islands newest resort boasts a big selection of the best quality hotels and holiday villas in Lanzarote.

And whilst the island is best known for sunshine and beach holidays there are still plenty of visitors who are here to view Lanzarote´s many cultural attractions.

The majority of which - with the exception of the Tiamnafay Volcano Park - are concentrated in the North of the island.  Making Costa Teguise the best base for those who plan to visit the many creations of the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique.

Travel to Lanzarote

Arrecife airport is located just outside the islands capital and welcomes the bulk of British visitors on Thursdays and Mondays - which are the main UK flight days to and from the island.

The island is currently served by a number of the leading budget airlines, such as easyJet, Monarch and Thomas Cook, all of whom offer cheap flights to Lanzarote. Helping to ensure that prices remain reasonably competitive - starting at around £200 per person depending on the time of year.

On arrival, transfer options to the main resorts of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca are pretty limited.  Package holiday travellers will of course be met by their reps and ushered onto coaches.  Other new arrivals though will either have to join what can often be a pretty large taxi queue (especially on Thursdays - expect at least a twenty minute wait).  Or book a hire car at on of the many desks in the arrivals lounge.

There is a public bus service available - however this only heads into Arrecife.

Which is of little use for those staying in resorts located in the opposite direction - such as Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

Getting Around Lanzarote

The same sort of scenario applies when it comes to touring the island.  As there is a good public bus route which runs along the south east coastline, connecting the three main resorts.  But services become more limited when heading inland - which is where the vast bulk of the main tourist attractions are located.

Car hire in Lanzarote remains the best option - offering flexibility at decent rates.  With prices working out at around €20 per day and petrol available much more cheaply than in the UK at around €1 per litre.

Alternatively there is no shortage of companies offering guided tours of the island for those who´d rather let someone else do the driving.

On our website you will find more information about everything you need for the perfect Lanazarote holiday experience.
Sporting Events

Why not take the trip over to the mainland for some continental football… Football tickets to all the big games are freely available so book yours before you go…

British consumers are refusing to give up their holidays abroad.  Despite the weakening pound and the credit crunch.  As visitor numbers to Lanzarote continue to grow - according to the Spanish airport authority AENA.  Who recorded a 15.6% growth in British tourism to the island during the first half of 2008.

Lanzarote has long been a popular destination with visitors from the UK.  Thanks to a clement year round climate that delivers minimum temperatures of 20c even in the depths of winter.  Mix in four hour flight times, over ninety great beaches, lots of unique tourist attractions and a relaxed pace of life and the island has all the right ingredients for a great holiday in the sun.

British tourists certainly think so - as 509,755 visitors from the UK enjoyed a stay on the island during the first six months of 2008.  An increase of 15.6% on 2007.  Confounding industry observers who postulated that the credit crunch could spell the end for the holiday abroad.

It´s not just the British who are reluctant to surrender their week in the sun either.  As Irish tourist numbers have also increased across the same period - up 5.9% on the first half of 2007.  With 123,047 tourists from Eire visiting Lanzarote.

Dutch, Swiss, Norwegian and Swedish numbers have also increased.  And even the Spanish have been getting in on the act - with the Canary Island Tourist Board registering an increase of 3.7% in visits from the mainland during the first half of 2008.
